Advanced Swim Training

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

Purpose: To train instructor candidates to teach a variety of water safety courses.  This includes the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn - to- Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics.

Prerequisites: Must be at least 16 years of age on or before the last day of the course.  Able to complete the following skills consistent with American Red Cross Learn to Swim Level 4 Stroke Performance Criteria:

Front crawl - 25 yards
Back crawl - 25 yards
Breaststroke – 25 yards
Elementary backstroke – 25 yards
Sidestroke – 25 yards
Butterfly – 15 yards
Maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).
Tread water for 1 minute

Course length: 32 hours including the Fundamentals of Instructor Training course.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Review

Purpose:  To provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies.  To provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

Prerequisites: Must be at least 15 years of age on or before the last day of the course. Able to pass the following prerequisite swim skills on the first day of class:

1. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breastroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is NOT allowed. Goggles may be used.

2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only legs.

3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

  • Starting in the water swim 20 yards. Face may be out of the water.  Goggles are not allowed.
  • Surface dive feet or head first to a depth of 7 - 10 feet and retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface.  Exit the water without using the ladder or steps.

Course length: Full Course: 26 hours. Review Course: 13 hours.

American Red Cross CPR/AED 

Purpose:  American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers. Designed for individuals with a duty to respond to emergencies, this program combines discussions, video and hands-on training. Real-life rescue scenarios reinforce decision-making skills. Course covers how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. Course includes free quarterly refreshers.

Topics include:

    • Primary assessment
    • Ventilations (incl. use of CPR breathing barriers and use of BVMs)
    • Choking (incl. conscious and unconscious)
    • CPR (incl. one- and two-rescuer)
    • AED

Course length: Approximately 5.5 hours. 

American Heart Association Heartsaver AED

Purpose:  American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED is a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult CPR and AED use, as well as how to relieve choking on an adult. This course teaches skills with AHA’s research-proven Practice-While-Watching (PWW) technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback and guide the students’ learning of skills.

Course length: Approximately 2.5 hours.
